BOSS “Dr.Rhythm” DR-55
■DR-55は、ローランドのエフェクター系ブランドのボスから1979年に発表されました。現在も綿々とリリースされている「ドクター・リズム」の初号機となる存在です。ちなみに、この他のローランド「ドクター」シリーズとしては、「Dr.Beat」や「Dr.Synth」、最近の「Dr.Sample」等があります。中でもこの「Dr.Rhythm」はコンパクトなリズム・マシンの草分けと言ってもいいでしょう。
前年発売のCR-78で開拓したプログラマブル機能を搭載しながら、電池駆動なのでコンパクトです。何より19800円という驚異的な低価格(CR-78は10万円以上)が魅力でした。そのため当時のテクノ少年の必須アイテムとなりヒットしたらしく、なかなか購入できない状況もあったようです。音色は、「トン」「ペシャ」といった、およそキックやスネアに聞こえないようなものです。たった4つの音色(プログラム可能なのは3音色+アクセント)しか使えませんが、そのシンプルな操作とCR-78等とも違った音色で、未だ愛着をもって語られる事の多いマシンです。僕も含め「これが最初に買った電子楽器」という人は多いのではないでしょうか。
■その魅力的な音色を聴けるのは、ゲルニカの1st「改造への躍動」をもって他にはないでしょう。アルバム中ほとんどの曲で、これでもかと言わんばかりにDR-55サウンドが使われまくっています。DR-55は、CR-78と同様にソングが組めないため、パターンを切り替えてテープ編集で構成したようです。クラシックの素養に基づく複雑な構成は「お見事！」の一言。その昔、ライブハウス渋谷ラ・ママで観たとき(対バンはEP-4)はKORGのラムダ等の演奏でDR-55はありませんでしたが、背後にTEACのオープンリールが回っていましたっけ……。
■リズムパターンは、右上の大きなダイヤルで切り替えますが、多少突っ込み気味に回さないと巧くリズムが繋がりませんでした。右側面の「FS-1」ジャックはスタート／ストップのフットスイッチのジャックです。左側面には出力端子以外に「DBS／CSQ」端子があり、シーケンサー等と同期演奏可能です。
■当時、このDR-55の類似品(?)も出回りました。ローランドのエフェクターやミキサー等の組立キット専門ブランドのAMDEK(現ローランドDGの前身)は、DR-55と同じ仕様のRMK-100を18500円で発売。自分で組立てる必要があるためDR-55より1000円安く、音色も微妙に違っています。当時の雑誌には改造記事も掲載され、僕が持っているものもキックのチューニングが可能になっています。また、コンパクト・エフェクター・サイズのプリセット・タイプのリズムボックスを出していた、SOUNDMASTER(日本のメーカーという以外、詳細不明)からはSR88というコピー品が出ました。コピーといえど、DR-55には無いフィル・イン機能が付加されていたり、音色も全く違う魅力的なもので、なかなかあなどれないマシンです。何故かパネルデザインがグレーと青の二種類ありました。海外では、イギリス製のCLEF Master Rhythmというのがあったようです。
■他のギター用エフェクターと同様のデザインの箱には、同じくカタログ冊子やBOSSのステッカーが入っていました。YMO好きのテクノ／宅録少年が買い求める以外に、ギタリストの購入も多かったと思います。そういえば2回目のワールド・ツアーの際、松武氏のブース写真に見つける事が出来たDR-55。YMOに憧れる少年にとって、唯一共有できた機材かも。(あ、BIASのBS-2もありましたねぇ)
